inFrom Lucy’s (Volunteer Co-ordinator) recent email, full of news, and some requests:
I am pleased to announce that we have our next coffee morning and afternoon booked in for October with the subject being Rex Whistler! We will be given showings of specially made films by one of our own team members, Bob Andrews, on different aspects of Rex’s life.
The dates and times are:
Thursday 20th October 2-4pm
Monday 24th October 10am – 12noon (please note that for this one the coffee and chat will take place 10-11am and the video showings will be from 11am-12noon)
Our programme of volunteer training carries on next month with refresher training for the whole volunteer team. This will cover general museum practices, health and safety, customer service, and a focus on our key items in the collection. This training is designed to get everyone up to date on our most recent policies and activities in the museum and it is vital that as many volunteers as possible attend. There will be several more sessions between now and Christmas to fit around everyone’s commitments and availability.
Please let me know if you are able to attend on 7th October. There will of course be tea, coffee, cake and biscuits for your efforts!
Our housekeepers are on leave on the following dates and so we require cover for the morning clean and restocking of the toilets before opening and for the afternoon toilet checks and showcase dusting throughout the galleries.
Saturday 15th October
Sunday 16th October
Monday 17th October
Tuesday 18th October
Monday 7th November
Monday 28th November

inSummer Party – Thursday 1st September 6pm – 7.30pm
In case you missed it, The Salisbury Museum Volunteers’ summer party is booked in and we have a quiz ready for our usual celebratory fun!
As Volunteers have come to expect, respect, even FEAR, the Party Quizzes are usually a little more challenging than most. However, this latest one, even if you don’t have all the answers, will introduce you to a delightful circular walk around the centre of the city, and is not to be missed (no actual walking required on the day!).
It does include one or two of the city’s many blue plaques, on which our own Alan Clarke is something of an expert, so choose to be on his team!

From Rachel’s (Volunteer Co-ordinator) newsletter this week
Social media, help needed – we have a great opportunity to share volunteering stories across our social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. If you have anything you would like to share with our remote followers and supporters or have any ideas, please get in touch. I can do the technical bits, if you have a great story to tell about volunteering but don’t do social media, please do still come forward
Please also remember that we welcome articles for this blog. A quick scroll back through recent examples will give potential contributors a feel of what we include and we are, for obvious reasons, particularly keen to include articles about Volunteering itself. Contact the Volunteer Co-ordinator.
By the way, the blog has a ‘search’ facility (top right) and if readers are interested to see items about Volunteering, just search ‘volunteers’ .
Volunteers’ Week Special Talk: Wednesday 2 June 11am start The talk led by Alan Clarke will take us on a fascinating journey – Australia, Salisbury – and a rather unusual dinner guest! The link is in the newsletter.
Engagement Volunteers
The museum is up and running again, seven days a week, and engagement Volunteers are needed, especially at weekends.
Archaeology Festival, Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 July – help needed
We are so excited to see the return of the Archaeology Festival to the museum on the 24 and 25 July. The festival will be outside with a wonderful mix of stallholders, with many local organisations returning to the festival. There will also be a fascinating programme of talks that will take place on the lawn. Volunteers are a huge part of the festival in terms of event delivery and also providing a warm, friendly and reassuring welcome. Above all else, it will be so lovely to see people face to face again.
Friday: Early set up 10am to 1pm around 3-4 volunteers to help with putting up the marquee etc.
Saturday 24 July: Event Set up- 7.30am to 10am 5-6 volunteers, physical duties include lifting.
Sunday 25 July: 5pm to 7pm event clear up. 3-4 volunteers.
Both event days, Saturday and Sunday : 10am-1.30pm and 1.30pm to 5pm. 3-4 volunteers on each shift (engagement, looking after stallholders, etc).
