My name is Chloe-Ann Poultney and I am currently studying History at The Stonehenge School in Amesbury. I had originally planned to do my work experience at the Iron Age Museum and then at Cotswold Archaeology until I stumbled on the gem that is the Salisbury Museum. I was initially drawn to it due to its collections. Everyone at my school has heard of the Amesbury Archer and of what was found at Stonehenge, Durrington Walls and other sites around Salisbury Plain and I now had the opportunity to get a rather hands-on experience with these finds, and was ecstatic. I sorted out my placement as soon as I was able.
I was not disappointed by what I got up to while I was there. I and another student on placement spent the week working in all sorts of departments around the museum, examples include working with the Costume, Ceramics and the Social History departments. Most of the work was cataloguing finds and items donated to the museum but it couldn’t be more interesting and I’ve gotten a real feel for how much work actually goes on behind the scenes to keep the place up and running.
